According to Jeffrey Young's Theory, the family of origin plays a fundamental role in the support of emotional needs during a child's development. Considering this assumption, the present study aims to verify the predictive power the experiences in the family of origin has in the activation of the schemas from each domain. The sample was composed of 372 subjects, 186 men and 186 women, with ages ranging between 19 and 81 years old. The measures used were a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Sub scales from the Family Background Questionnaire (FBQ) and the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-3). A quantitative investigation was performed assuming an explicative design, with a convenience sampling, using snowball process. The results indicated that experiences in the family of origin contribute to the activation of schemas from each domain. The discussion point that these results can help in understanding the critical role parents play during a child's development, as well as to think of interventions focused on parents and caregivers educating them about a child's basic emotional needs. This way, it can be possible to promote the establishment of healthier mental schemas.
