FAVA, Débora Cristina  e  PACHECO, Janaína Thais Barbosa. Maltreatment, behavior problems and selfsteem in adolescents. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2017, vol.13, n.1, pp. 20-28. ISSN 1808-5687.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20170005.

Maltreatment experienced by children in the family are considered harmful to the child's development and a risk factor for the development of behavior problems. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between maltreatment, self-esteem and behavioral problems. Eighty-four teens participated divided into case and control groups according to the history of maltreatment. Results showed that adolescents maltreated in childhood had more symptoms of externalizing behavior and poor self-esteem than those who did not undergo this experience. A correlation analysis found that externalizing and maltreatment were positively correlated, as well as symptoms of anxiety, withdrawal and depression and other behavior problems. Self-esteem was negatively correlated with maltreatment and behavior problems. These findings help understand the effects of maltreatment on the development and implementation of interventions targeting children and adolescents.
