Abstract

GUSMAO, Estefanea Élida da Silva et al. Maladaptative schemas, anxiety and depression: an explanatory model. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2017, vol.13, n.1, pp. 29-38. ISSN 1808-5687.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20170006.

The present study aims to propose an explanatory model for depression and anxiety based on Jeffrey Young's Schema Therapy. In other words, its objective is to identify which maladaptative schema contributes to explain the condition of having anxious symptoms or depressive symptoms. To reach this goal, 406 people from general population answered the Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scale and the Brazilian version of Young's Schema Questionnaire. Initially, through a Pearson's correlation was possible to select which of the maladaptative schema maintained a stronger relation with anxiety and depression and, from this, data were analyzed through a binary logistic regression. In this regression, schemas of higher correlation with the constructs of interest - anxiety and depression, were selected as predictors. The results shown that the maladaptative schema of Failure presents a higher probability of predicting whom belonged to the group with higher punctuation in anxiety; while, regarding depression, besides Failure the schema of Abandonment was also significant. These results are consistent with the literature and represent an advance, according to the fact that it can provide aids to a effective intervention in clinical context and in creating public politics that aims to decrease the current high rates of anxiety and depression.
