Research and clinical practice show that CBT is effective in reducing symptoms and rates of recurrence, with or without medication, in a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by excessive worry. GAD is among the most commonly encountered mental disorders in the clinic and, although it was initially seen as a mild disorder, it is nowadays evaluated that GAD is a chronic disease, associated with a relatively high co-morbidities and high individual and social costs. Aiming to contribute to the study of clinical practice, the present study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. Therefore, indexed publications searches were conducted in electronic databases Scielo and Pubmed, using the keywords "cognitive behavioral therapy" and "generalized anxiety disorder".
