The objective of this study was to report the development of an empathy evaluation instrument in sports coaches, the Sports Context Empathy Questionnaire. It contains a scene that involves the interaction between coach and athlete and five issues, through which coaches express their opinion about behaviors, feelings and thoughts possibly felt by the actors in the scene. The answer to each question gets a score from zero to ten that evaluates the empathy of the coaches. The formulation of the items was based on the specialized literature and considered the cognitive, affective and behavioral components of empathy. Higher scores on the items indicate higher levels of empathy presented by the respondent. The evaluation of the construct through the set of items was performed by independent judges who confirmed that the items are relevant and appropriate to measure what the instrument proposes. It was verified that the instrument was adequate to be used in different modalities and allowed to evaluate the empathic posture of the coaches. This instrument can serve as an initial assessment in the collection of information, but should be complemented with other empathy assessment tools
