Abstract

This study aims the study of personality by understanding the relation between initial maladaptive schemes and empathy, given its importance of this constructs for the development of healthy interpersonal relationships. The objective was to investigate if there is a relation between the initial maladaptive schemes and empathy in university students. A quantitative, correlational and cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of 60 university students who were selected for convenience and at online platform. All ethics procedures were adopted, and the subjects respond to the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, a Multidimensional Interpersonal Reactivity Scale (EMRI) and Young Scheme Questionnaire (YSQ-S2). After the data collect, descriptive analyzes and Pearson correlation analyzes were performed. The results obtained showed 22 correlations between initial maladaptive schemes and empathy constructs, indicating that there is a relationship between empathy and initial maladaptive schemes. This results claims for the importance of early development of empathy and prevention of initial maladaptive schemes for health development, improving interpersonal relationships and mental health.
