Abstract

The objective of this study was to outline the production of academic papers in portuguese on empathy and therapeutic relationship, focusing on cognitive behavioral therapy. A systematic review was initially conducted on the subject contemplating all the psychology approaches, with the descriptor "therapeutic relationship" AND "empathy", and them, refining the descriptor to "cognitive therapy" AND "empathy" contemplating the data bases Biblioteca Virtual emSaúde (BVS), da Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe emCiências da Saúde (LILACS), da Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). From these surveys, 3 valid articles on the topic were analyzed. The results indicate that empathy is a relevant ability to establish an adequate therapeutic relationship, which is essential for treatment success. It is highlighted the need for more studies published in Portuguese.
