Abstract

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) responsible for connecting the mandible and jaw to the skull. Disorders in this musculature, characterize Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD), compromising the stomatognathic system. Objective:to identify the efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Intervention in chronic TMD patients. Participated 11 patients, average of 30.01 years old, 10 female and 1 male. Ten meetings, of 1h and 30 minutes, the total amount of 15h, with pre and post intervention evaluation, were used: DTM Questionnaire, Stress Inventory, Coping Inventory, Quality of Life Questionnaire and Anxiety and Depression Protocol. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program (CBTP) was implemented as a helper in the identification and perception of aspects associated with pain. The results were obtained decreased anxiety symptoms (p = 0.01) and depression (p = 0.02), stress reduction, alert phase (p = 0.04), near exhaustion (p = 0.01) and exhaustion (p = 0.01). Results of Coping indicated a decrease in the removal ability (p = 0.01), with statistical significance. There were no significant changes in quality of life. It was concluded improvements in depression, anxious and stress symptomatology. Quality of life and Coping had small improvements. CBTP provided a new insight and perspective on pain as an important contribution to TMD treatment
