Abstract

CONSOLINI, Marília; LOPES, Ederaldo José  and  LOPES, Renata Ferrarez Fernandes. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for High-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder: integrative review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2019, vol.15, n.1, pp. 38-50. ISSN 1808-5687.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20190007.

This article aimed to present an integrative review of articles published in Portuguese and English in the last ten years on Classical Behavioral Cognitive Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (TEA-AF). We searched the BVS, MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases. Key words and combinations used were "Cognitive Behavior Therapy"; and " Autism spectrum disorder" in English and Portuguese. 40 articles were selected. The results indicated that CBT presents maintenance of cognitive and behavioral techniques, such as psychoeducation, exposure and response, cognitive restructuring and emotional regulation. Adaptations of techniques and/or protocols were present in most articles and the common ones were use of patient's personal interests and use of visual strategies. There was an important focus on comorbidities and associated symptoms, such as anxiety. The most common type of intervention was group intervention, in addition to intervention with parental involvement. The results suggest that CBT presents effective results of intervention for ASF-HF, however, adaptations are inseparable and there is a need for greater understanding of the manifestation of anxiety in this population. Thus, recent research and intervention protocols are promising and may further collaborate in the area of ASD-HF.

Keywords : Cognitive Behavior Therapy; Autism Spectrum Disorder; intervention.
