Sense of self-efficacy, health behaviors and adherence to treatment in patients with diabetes and/or hypertension. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2020, vol.16, n.1, pp. 06-33. The number of people with Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) has shown an exponential growth every year worldwide. Lifestyle change and adherence to treatment are critical for the stability and management of these diseases. One of the variables involved in the treatment is the sense of self-efficacy, which indicates the ability of an individual to have a certain behavior, in this case, to adhere to health behaviors. The relationship between sense of self-efficacy, presence of health behaviors and adherence level in patients with hypertension (HTN) and/or diabetes mellitus (DM) was investigated. Fifty-one patients participated in the study, and the Health Attitudes and Behaviors Questionnaire, the Questionnaire of Adherence Level to Treatment and the General Perceived Self- Efficacy Scale were used. Individuals with a greater sense of self-efficacy were found to adhere more to treatment and to exhibit more health behaviors. There was a prevalence of women in the sample and lower adherence of employed patients to treatment. These results show the need for interventions to increase the sense of self- efficacy in patients with HTN and DM, and policies aimed at facilitating the self-care of employed people.

Palabras clave : Self Efficacy; Treatment Adherence and Compliance; Health Behavior.
