Abstract

DE-MATOS, Bárbara Wolff; MACHADO, Laura Morais  and  HENTSCHKE, Guilherme Scotta. Psychological aspects related to obesity: case report. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2020, vol.16, n.1, pp. 42-49. ISSN 1808-5687.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20200007.

Obesity is a public health problem and its cause may be associated with genetic and environmental predispositions, as well as being influenced by mental and emotional factors. These factors mainly affect women who use overeating as a compensatory strategy, initially generating immediate relief and later feelings of guilt. This case report sought to point out the relationship between obesity and psychological factors from the cognitive- behavioral perspective. A sociodemographic record and a semi-structured interview script were used in the study, which allowed the construction of thematic categories on obese mental functioning, namely: the relationship between dysphoric feelings and eating behavior and beliefs related to obesity, based on the Bar-din Content analysis. Both evidenced the relationship between obesity and psychological factors, making it clear how much food is used as a coping and / or compensatory strategy. From the results obtained it is essential that patients with obesity receive psychological treatment in the cognitive behavioral approach in order to demystify some dysfunctional beliefs and develop in the same strategies more effective coping.
