Abstract

Different terms and conceptual models are used to characterize and explain the set of behavior exhibited in the relationship of parents with their children.  The purpose of this study was to identify aspects of Brazilian academic production about parental practices.  A bibliographical review in three databases was carried out, using selected keywords.  In total, 64 abstract of articles were obtained. Distinct categories were elaborated to analyze the abstracts. It was verified a co-existence of different theoretical models for the comprehension of parental behavior, while the age of children/adolescents was identified as an important variable for the distinction of these concepts. It was concluded that it is necessary new methodological arrangements to achieve a better knowledge of the complexity of family relationships and the variables that have an effect on parental practices.
