Abstract

This article is based on a qualitative research and it rends problematics  the issue of narcissistic suffering, such as some cultural and social features involved in its promotion or perpetuance in present times. On this purpose, the consumer society  were investigated based in two notions considered crucial for its comprehension - the excess and the deprivation - and some relations between this type of social organization and the subjectivity pattern relative were appointed. In order to elucidate the meaning of narcissistic suffering, the concept of narcissism in Freud is approached. In addition to that, contemporaneous elaborations about this concept and its relation with the culture and society are presented. Finally, we describe some repercussions of the narcissism social promotion/disruption mechanisms, individuals' subjectivities, in the affective ties and in the relationships among the individuals.
