Abstract

This paper presents the use of photography as a research method related to interview for youth inquiry. It is a qualitative research to examine the meanings of work for young people in their first employment experience, which techniques for data collections were: semi-structured interviews and photography. As an example is presented the case of a young worker. In the first interview the young were asked to speak about his own person and family life, especially about work issues, afterwards he was asked to take pictures of scenes of work. After having the pictures developed, it was made another interview, which the young spoke about his understandings of the meanings of the taken pictures. After the transcription of the data, it was made analysis of Core Meanings of the data, organized in three categories: 1) entrance in the labour market; 2) work and everyday life, and 3) value of work. The analysis of this case presents the centrality of work in the life of the interviewed. It is possible to conclude that photography is an important methodological approach to investigate young people.
