Abstract
GONTIJO, Sandro Rodrigues and MASSIMI, Marina. Concept of memory in father Vieira's sermons. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2012, vol.64, n.3, pp. 163-182. ISSN 1809-5267.
In the Modern Age, memory was considered as, among other things, a power of soul (psique). Considering that XVII century religious oratory is a plentiful source of psychological knowledge, this work wants to point how father Antônio Vieira (1608 - 1697) dealt in his sermons with the matter of memory. Based on history of culture and history of psychology, we intend to identify the production context and aproppiations made by Vieira. In his sermons, memory, along with will and intelect, characterizes human ontology. This internal sense also assists intelective capacity in establishing judgments, because it provides intelect with a temporal dimension. Even more, it is through memory that knowledge of oneself is established. Memorative power has also an ethical dimension: as memory of something is "made" a behavior and an affective state towards what it is remembered are simultaneously suggested.
