Abstract

PIRES, Fábio Becker  and  SCHNEIDER, Daniela Ribeiro. Life projects and relapses in alcohol-dependent patients. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.65, n.1, pp. 21-37. ISSN 1809-5267.

It has been discussed the need to broaden the scope of research on alcoholism, besides the dominant biomedical perspective in order to address the determinants of alcoholism and produce an understanding closer to the reality of the dependents. We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory survey aiming to unveil the life projects of a group of alcoholics and explore possible relationships between such projects and relapse in alcohol use, on one hand, and the possibility of recovery, on the other hand. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with alcoholics hospitalized in specialized ward of a general hospital, which were coded and analyzed according to Grounded Theory. Among the results, there is the passive attitude of the majority of respondents: they predominantly report hope of recovery and improvement in various aspects of life, but poor concrete plans, and tend to lead their lives according to treatment prescriptions.

Keywords : Alcoholism; Relapse; Life project; Qualitative research.
