Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the Social Representations (SR) of middle and lower class mothers about Human Rights (HR) and Child and Adolescent Rights (CAR). The SR theory was adopted. The SR theory was employed in interviewing 120 mothers who live in João Pessoa were interviewed, by using an interview guide with open questions about sociodemographic caracteristics and the known HR and CAR. Results, obtained using ALCESTE, indicated that: middle class mothers mentioned, as an example of HR, social, individuals, and group rights, and as an example of CAR, social rights; lower class mothers mentioned, as HR, rights violation and social conviviality, and as CAR, Child and Adolescent Statue rights and the right to control their children; HR, influenced by social classes, were organized in two axes, as well as the CAR. The authors concluded that the known HR and CAR, and the organizing axes as well, were influenced by the social classes to which mothers belonged.
