Abstract

ROCHA, Patricia Jovasque; ARPINI, Dorian Mônica  and  SAVEGNAGO, Sabrina Dal Ongaro. Social work: perceptions of family members who experienced it. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2015, vol.67, n.1, pp. 99-114. ISSN 1809-5267.

This study aimed to discover the experience of the family of a child or adolescent that was reinserted into his/her family after being taken into child protective services. We conducted a qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews, with four families that had a child taken into child protective services in one of two specific institutions in a rural city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and they were then reinserted into the family unit. That data was studied through Content Analysis, through which the specific categories emerged. The results demonstrate that the interviewed families suffered from having their children taken into child protective services. In general, the mothers appeared to have understood the reasons for having their children taken away. Thus, contrary to what a stigmatized vision might suppose, there was affection between the children and their families. Moreover, Brazilian Law 12.010/09 has made changes that are bringing institutions and families closer together.
