Abstract

MADALENA, Marcela Bianca de Andrade; FALCKE, Denise  and  CARVALHO, Lucas de Francisco. Marital Violence and Personality Disorders. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2015, vol.67, n.2, pp.122-139. ISSN 1809-5267.

Marital violence is a public health problem that has many issues associated with its occurrence, among them personality disorders. The purpose of this study was to correlate the pathological functioning of personality with the dimensions of intimate partner violence in a sample of 139 married couples in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The instruments used were the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory (DCPI) and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2). The results revealed a positive correlation of several DCPI factors with dimensions of marital violence. The only factors that did not correlate with any dimension of violence were the factors Need for Attention and Conscientiousness. We observed the existence of possible patterns in the pathological functioning of the personalities of spouses, whether by similarity or complementarity, something that future research can confirm.

Keywords : Couple; Marital violence; Personality; Psychopathology.
