Abstract

TEIXEIRA, Janaina Nascimento  and  ALVARENGA, Patrícia. Relations between maternal psychological and behavioral control and child anxiety. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2016, vol.68, n.3, pp. 145-160. ISSN 1809-5267.

The present study investigated relations between maternal psychological and behavioral control and anxiety problems in children aged between six and eight years old. The study included 83 mothers who answered the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18), and the Structured Interview about Parental Childrearing Practices and Child Socialization. Regression analysis and comparative analysis between a group of children with clinical profile of anxiety and a group of children without clinical profile in all syndromes and scales assessed by the CBCL, confirmed the predictive power of critical control over child anxiety. In addition, the comparison of the two groups revealed a higher frequency of appropriate support practices reports by mothers of the nonclinical group. These results reinforce the importance of critical control for understanding anxiety symptoms in childhood.

Keywords : Child anxiety; Mothers' childrearing practices; Parental control.
