FONTGALLAND, Rebeca Cavalcante; MOREIRA, Virginia  e  MELO, Cynthia de Freitas. The experience of being empathic to the beginner humanistic-phenomenological psychotherapist. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2018, vol.70, n.1, pp. 5-20. ISSN 1809-5267.

Empathic understanding is a fundamental concept in humanistic-phenomenological psychotherapy, and it poses a challenge for beginning psychologists. This research aims to comprehend the experience of being empathic to the novice humanist-phenomenological psychotherapist. An exploratory, qualitative approach was carried out in which 25 trainees from clinic-school in Fortaleza participated in an open interview, whose data were submitted to mundane phenomenological analysis. Results show that the experience of being empathic presents itself as something to be constructed in each session, allowing the therapist to approach his client, accepting his suffering. This occurs through phenomenological reduction that, as a methodological tool, has much to contribute to the realization of empathic understanding. It was concluded that empathy is confirmed as a central figure in psychotherapy and can be facilitated by the phenomenological reduction.
