Abstract

ALVIM, Mônica Botelho. Art and life between visibility and invisibility. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2020, vol.72, n.1, pp. 25-39. ISSN 1809-5267.  http://dx.doi.org/10.36482/1809-5267.ARBP2020v72i2p.25-39.

Considering the last works of Merleau-Ponty and his reflections on visible and invisible, flesh and language, art and life, in this essay we discuss visibility and invisibility. Moving between psychology, art and philosophy, we stablish a dialogue with Didi-Huberman's work on seeing and being seen and Roland Barthes on the photographic, in order to think about experience and the processes of subjectivation. Based on two scenes of theatrical performances by favela dwellers, we discuss the status of visibility and invisibility in relation to the problematic of image in the production and reproduction of subjectivities and ways of perceiving. Considering images-cliché as cultural sedimentation that reproduce as copies, perpetuating themselves as truths and promoting a kind of erasure of the invisible, we argue that art allows a kind of experience capable of opening time, making the invisible visible and encountering otherness.

Keywords : Merleau-Ponty; Image; Art; Otherness; Subjectivity.
