Abstract

SA-SERAFIM, Roseane Christhina da Nova; SILVA, Rhyrilly Pâmella Ribeiro da  and  BU, Emerson Araújo Do. Social representations on hospitalization elaborated by chronic patients and caregivers. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.73, n.1, pp. 52-69. ISSN 1809-5267.  http://dx.doi.org/10.36482/1809-5267.ARBP2021v73i1p.52-69.

This study aimed at analyzing the Social Representations of patients with chronic diseases and their caregivers about hospitalization. For that, a quantitative and qualitative research, with a descriptive-exploratory nature, was carried out, with 65 participants (seven children, 38 adults and 20 elderly); from them, 30 were hospitalized chronic patients and 35 were their caregivers. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Free Word Association Technique were used for data collection. Results showed that when representing hospitalization, patients with chronic diseases, regardless of their age group, emphasize the importance of care by health professionals and their caregivers in the hospitalization process. Differently, from the caregivers' perspective, the sadness, suffering and difficulty are addressed in the hospital experience, either through hospitalization itself, through the treatment offered to the patient, or even, through the change in their routine.
