Abstract

RODRIGUES, Bruna Mendes Roza  and  CUNHA, Ana Cristina Barros da. Home-insemination (HI): lesbian maternity experiences and dilemms. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.73, n.1, pp. 169-184. ISSN 1809-5267.  http://dx.doi.org/10.36482/1809-5267.ARBP2021v73i1p.169-184.

Home Insemination (HI) is an unconventional low-cost reproduction method that lesbian women have chosen to experience their motherhood. This choice for HI implies that women experience dilemmas and anguishes due to the risks of this method. Our objective was to analyze the subjective experience of lesbians who choose HI to become pregnant and be mothers. This is a qualitative netnographic study with 101 lesbian women, recruited from social media groups on the Internet. The women's perceptions and emotional experiences related to the choice for HI were analyzed by their reports written in open questions via GoogleForm. It was observed that the choice for HI was based on subjective motivations, such as the ease and its low cost, and the donor's abstaining from the paternity. We conclude that HI is a resource that helps lesbians achieve their desire to be mothers, sometimes denied by the high cost of traditional methods of assisted reproduction.
