Abstract

RABELO, Fabiano Chagas; DIAS, Reginaldo Rodrigues  and  MARTINS, Karla Patrícia Holanda. The theoretical articulation of the free association. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.73, n.2, pp. 83-999. ISSN 1809-5267.  http://dx.doi.org/10.36482/1809-5267.ARBP2021v73i2p.83-99.

The theoretical articulation process of free association is mapped between 1900 and 1913. It is argued that it is only named and elevated to the condition of fundamental rule retroactively, after advances in technique, metapsychology and psychoanalytic clinic. Initially the principles of free association are mixed with the method of dream interpretation. The strategic steps towards its recognition are: the questioning of a trace of suggestion in the analyst-analyzing link, the metapsychological developments about the fantasy, the considerations on the function of abstinence in the analytical treatment and the debate on the modulation of attention in the analyst's listening and in the patient´s speech. There are also some ethical and epistemological notes about the relevance of free association, highlighting the importance of the participation of the analyst in the implementation of this procedure.

Keywords : Psychoanalysis; Free association; Floating attention; Suggestion; Transference.
