Abstract

MESQUITA, Giovana Reis. The here and now in Gestalt therapy: a dialogue with the contemporary sociology. Rev. abordagem gestalt. [online]. 2011, vol.17, n.1, pp. 59-67. ISSN 1809-6867.

This paper explores and discusses, in a theoretical perspective, the relationship of the foundation of Gestalt therapy - the here and now - with some sociological studies, such as Bauman, Giddens and Elias, about the psychological and practical conditions of contemporary man. As a starting point, it is assumed that the way society deals with each time is historically and culturally determined. Sociologists have argued that modern life has placed the subject in a new treatment condition over time and, consequently, their mental functioning, where there is a constant project into the future and the past. The Gestalt therapy, in turn, emphasizes the awareness, promoting the authentic contact with yourself. We observed, however, a tension between individual experience proposed by Gestalt therapy and the modern western society. Thus, we aimed a theoretical concept about the here and now, discussing the limits and possibilities of maintaining consciousness focused in the present tense. Studies like this are meant to provide theoretical and conceptual elements for research in Gestalt therapy and to foster discussion of clinical placements. Undertake a sociological research taking to understand psychological facts, allows deeper understanding of the human, which is never exhausted in one field of knowledge.
