Abstract

ESCORCIO, Maíra Leite  and  DUTRA, Elza Maria do Socorro. Existential-phenomenological considerations on inhabiting the brazilian semi-arid. Rev. abordagem gestalt. [online]. 2018, vol.24, n.1, pp. 57-65. ISSN 1809-6867.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18065/RAG.2018v24n1.6.

Brazilian semi-arid (Sertão), one of the four sub-regions of the Northeast of the country, has undergone paradigmatic changes in the past decades. It has shifted from the perspective of "fight against drought" to that of a "coexistence with the semiarid" and thus State policies have been implemented with different focuses. The present study brings a heideggerian phenomenological approach to the changes in the way the people in the Sertão inhabit the land. The paradigm of fighting the drought is known for representing the semi-arid with aridity, restriction and scarcity. Those are the images presented by Brazilian national literature and by the national media in the first half of the XXth century, period of intense emigration from the mentioned area. The beginning of the XXIst century saw the emergence of the paradigm of coexistence in which the Sertão was presented as a place of possibilities and presence. Through a work of literature review this paper was able to establish a critical view over the current reality of the Sertão as a place for the old and the new paradigms. Both perspectives are present in the way people inhabit the land and connect with it, considering that humans are always being-in-the-world. In that sense, the semi-arid is given as a place for inhabiting in familiarity or estrangement affected by the experience of each other.
