This article has the objective of reflecting on the process of construction of the identity of the black person within the Brazilian racial relations. For that, we go back to the time of Colonial Brazil, when the slavery system was in force, advancing to Republican Brazil and to the abolition of slavery, approaching concepts such as the ideology of whitening, occurred at the end of the 19th century and the myth of the racial democracy, which was an idea which started to develop in the middle of the 20th century. The perception of how these elements were intertwined helps us to realize that the path towards the awareness and the formation of a black identity, articulated to values which are considered positive, is a process yet to be constructed.
