This article presents some reflections on the relationship between university and Psychiatric Reform within the framework of Brazilian Psychology. To this end, we will evoke some data pertaining to the current status and the history of assistance/care in mental health care and of the education in psychology and some conclusion of the research "The university institutions and the construction of the psychiatric reform in the state of Minas Gerais in the 60's, 70's, and 80's" (Goulart, 2007), completed in 2007. Its results were based on documentary and oral sources in the state of Minas Gerais. Therefore, the tensions and possible connections between the education projects emerging from the educational centers in psychology and the management of the Psychiatric Reform will be emphasized, with an attempt to point out the possibilities - which have already occurred and the current ones - of constitution of a critical professional culture which supports the Psychiatric Reform.
