The present study investigated the meanings assigned to the future and to life project's construction in the discourse of young people who attend a Reference Center of Social Assistance in a small town, in the south of the country. Thirteen interviews were performed and analyzed according to the referential of the Institutional Discourse Analyses. Among other results, it was evident that, in their discursive community, little is said about future. This one seems to be restricted to the poorness' perpetuation that is experienced in the present. This condition, assigned to the their perception that the assistance programs exclusively aim at improving the material living conditions, seems to contribute to the production of a feeling of helplessness regarding the possibility of plan a future life. The inclusion of professional orientation actions in the psychologist practice in social assistance is suggested with the aim of increase its power as a development and social transformation strategy.
