Abstract

This article analyzes the relation between humiliation and shame processes, that come from poverty, and social support as a way of coping with this condition. The research was conducted in an urban and a rural community of state of Brazil, with the participation of 417 subjects in the questionnaire application and 38 in 5 focus groups. It pretended to identify multidimensional poverty index (MPI), quantitative and qualitative aspects of humiliation and shame related to poverty condition and types and frequency of social support received in hard situations in life. MPI is higher in the rural community, the highest incidence of support was in the family, and formal support in public policy index was low. Social support is presented as a way of coping, it makes subjects feel they can control their own lives because they feel supported in difficult situations.
