Abstract

SILVA, Roseane Amorim da  and  MENEZES, Jaileila de Araújo. Ethnic-racial relations and education in quilombola communities. Pesqui. prát. psicossociais [online]. 2018, vol.13, n.3, pp. 1-17. ISSN 1809-8908.

In the present study, we sought to know the youthful experiences of men and women in two quilombola communities located in the interior of Pernambuco. Here our focus is on education issues in these communities. The research was developed in two moments. We conducted participant observation in Castainho and Estivas, and 20 interviews with young people. Data were analyzed from the intersectionality of gender, social class and race/ethnicity. With regard to education, several factors make it difficult to continue schooling. The young women need to work, because they have become pregnant and do not have a support network, because of demotivation. The men for the need to work, for the lack of incentive and still, both, if they want to continue their studies must move to the city, when they face another difficulty, public transportation. The quilombola population is not homogeneous and shelters different specificities that need to be considered in the educational policies for this population.
