Abstract

BONFATTI, Paulo Ferreira. The picture of Dorian Gray: a possible Jungian analysis from the archetype of Puer aeternus. Pesqui. prát. psicossociais [online]. 2019, vol.14, n.4, pp. 1-14. ISSN 1809-8908.

The purpose of this article is to contribute to the understanding of the psychological dynamics of Dorian Gray, protagonist of Oscar Wilde 's novel The picture of Dorian Gray from Jungian theory. Within the plot of the work, it is intended to deduce this character from the concept of the archetype of Puer aeternus - understood as the adult who wants to be an eternal child, remaining forever young and not wanting to grow up. This perspective considers that the Puer archetype and its manifestations can be seen not only in contemporary clinical psychology but also in several other archetypal expressions such as literature. In the analysis of the drama of this character will be perceived as being inescapable from its tragic end, considering it captured by this psychic dynamics of Puer aeternus in trying to deny the passage of time, aging, maturation, establishments of affective bonds and their relations with the world.

Keywords : Jungian Psychology; Dorian Gray; Literature; Oscar Wilde.
