Abstract

DIMENSTEIN, Magda  and  CIRILO NETO, Maurício. Conceptual approaches to vulnerability in health and social care. Pesqui. prát. psicossociais [online]. 2020, vol.15, n.1, pp. 1-17. ISSN 1809-8908.

This study aims to highlight the main approaches around the vulnerability category and to problematize the way they have been used in the field of health and social assistance. A non-systematic review of the literature and subsequent discursive analysis of the selected publications were carried out. The concept of vulnerability in collective health is used in order to overcome the limits of the risk category, evidencing the social determination of the health-disease-care process. In the field of human and social sciences it is associated with private groups of material and symbolic resources and/or in situations of marginalization, exclusion and social insecurity. In terms of both health and social assistance, it has been observed that there is a tendency towards reductionism, naturalization and individualization of the processes of vulnerability of populations.

Keywords : Vulnerability; Public policies; Health; Social assistance.
