Abstract

This article investigated the relationship between academic formation in Psychology and work demands in Social Assistance. It was presented a literature review about Psychology history in Brazil, academic formation and performance of psychologists in Social Assistance. It was also presented results from a research developed with professionals that work at CRAS. The research data were produced from a reflection group and the speeches were analyzed according to the Institutional Discourse Analysis. It was revealed that Psychology is building its professional practice in Social Assistance. Professionals are still guided by models from other contexts, especially the Clinical. These facts indicate a gap between academic formation, concrete demands and challenges in this field. It becomes important to proceed the curriculum review, connecting theory and practice, increase the discussion about interdisciplinary performance and reset the subjectivity concept, in order to ratify the Psychology position as a science and profession committed to social issues.
