We are inspired by the emerging decolonialist theories which advocate that universities as colonialist institutions located in countries with colonialist heritage, disrespect the plurality of hybrid societies and act to erase the knowledge of indigenous and African ethnic groups to conduct this study which investigates whether identity theories having been elaborated in Western contexts are sufficiently comprehensive to be applied in a terreiro of Candomblé. From the analysis of reports of Candomblé supporters contained in an ethnographic research, in particular the case study of two adherents, we indicate some inadequacies of identity theories for the study of the identity constitution of Candomblé culture supporters considering that this constitution is based on Afro-Brazilian epistemology. In greater emphasis we devote ourselves to the indigenous concept of ancestry referred to by adherents as the primary factor for adherence to Candomblé from which they build the African identity.
