This article introduces some aspects of the daily activities of the Penitentiary Security Agents. It presents historical facts related to the description of the functions and information about the actual situation of this professional category in the prisons of São Paulo. At the end a proposal to accompany these professionals is presented because of the alterations in their behavior which many security agents have shown during their long years of practice. These reflections represent facts which were collected during my master's dissertation entitled "Some Remarks on the Disciplinary Discourse - The representation of discipline and of the disciplinary in the speech of penitetiary security agents", the results of a survey done between 1996 and 1997 in some penitentiry units of São Paulo State; as well as from my developing experiences as a teacher during the courses of the formation of agents co-ordinated by the São Paulo Penitentiary Academy during '96, '97 and '98.
