Abstract

Psicol. Am. Lat. [online]. 2006, n.5, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1870-350X.

Since 1980, there has existed a movement in Brazilian psychiatry to "open the walls." This movement is characterized by its criticism of the in-patient model of treatment in psychiatric hospitals and by the emphasis on strageies for out-patient treatment. Further, in the same period of time another movement emerged, that of psychopathology, which is characterized by the creation of a technical jargon that has circulated beyond the walls of academic and medical/psychiatric institutions. This same jargon also circulates in daily discourse among non-professionals, such as in the media. The objective of this work is to present a study of "psi discourse" in television, emphasizing the ways that psychopathological categories appear in daily discourse as a result of their use in television. The study was done using the methodology of analysis of discourse and documentary techniques. With this work it was possible to analyse how "psi discourse" crosses the walls of academic and psychiatric institutions (as well as moving between the two) and appears on the television screen, informing daily human experience with a psychopathological perspective.

Keywords : Media; Psychopathology; Mental health/illness.
