The aim of this theoretical paper is to review the two most notorious tendencies in studying the urban environment, the pessimistic, which explore the negative impact on health, social relationships, safety and stress levels, and the positive, with special reference to the value of the city in educating people and living cultural experiences. By analyzing the new theoretical and applied tendencies in the environmental psychology field the work conclude with some suggestions on research problems, the need of theoretical development for integrating theories in environmental psychology and promoting psychologies involvement in planning urban policies.
