The paper describes the importance of psychological preparation of the child for heart surgery, showing procedures standardization on psychological attendance. Based on the psychoanalytical theory, it suggests changes in the classical approach with the child and family to account for the specific nature of the subject. Relates the course of introduction of pediatric preoperative procedures and the steps followed by the psychologist, as well as the motives that justify the adopted procedures. Points out the consequences both emotional and cognitive of the experience of surgery and the stay at intensive care units and to make adequate techniques to the institutional environment. The paper presents a proposal to develop what is possible within available environment, defending a strategy of hospital psychological action that raises institutional changes, upgrades service and contributes to the quality of care.
