The aim of this study was to identify the strategies of Coping used to manage and deal with stressful events in a sample of university students. This study consists of an epidemiological study of transverse section done in a sample of 466 students who attend the first and last university year (F= 291 and M= 175) from 28 courses and 56 classes from 5 different areas of knowledge. The Scale of Coping by Billings and Moos (Billings & Moos, 1981) was used to measure the replies to Coping. The results demonstrated that both sexes made use of the cognitive active method more than any other, focusing on the problem to mediate stressful events. The avoidance Coping was the one mostly used by female students who obtained low academic performance. The sample as an overall predominantly uses active strategies. Besides, at the end of the course the female university students present greater variation in the use of the active Coping in relation to the variable area of knowledge.
