This research is a descriptive study of the characteristics of two components of cognitive executive functions in a group of alcoholic patients in the community Gibara 1, Holguín province. This research was conducted between February and May 2008, with the aim of characterizing the mental flexibility and ability to implement strategies to new situations, to provide important diagnostic elements of the state of these functions in these patients, future development of neurocognitive rehabilitation strategies that can compensate the damage caused by excessive and prolonged consumption of alcohol. The need to study this problem in the municipality Gibara was justified by the extent of disease and deficiency of Community Mental Health Center in rehabilitation services. The sample consisted of 17 alcoholic patients classified in the Primary Health Care (PHC). Quantitative methodology was used for processing and analysis of results. To characterize the components of executive functions was applied or Wisconsin Cart Sorting Test Card Sorting Test, a high validity in their evaluation. The results showed a deterioration in the mental flexibility of these patients and the limited capacity for implementation of strategies to new situations or change.
