The objective of this study was to determine the meanings that students from threes universities in the Region of Central Mexico give to indigenous groups as a sign of their cultural citizenship. This work was conducted with 81 participants, male and female, using Natural Semantic Networks. For the analysis, the resulting words were placed into three semantic dimensions: Acceptance, Understanding and Stigmatization. Results obtained are: Acceptance 61.8%, with terms as culture, person, respect; Understanding 24.2%, with expressions as discrimination, marginalized, racism; and finally Stigmatization 14.0%, with words as illiterate, Indian, naco. Conclusions reassess the cultural heritage of indigenous and denote inequality and inequity social situations, however, there are also terms of intolerance and rejection, indicating a lack of civic culture in young people from some sectors of the Mexican society.
