Abstract

TOSI, Jeremías; TROGOLO, Mario  and  LEDESMA, Rubén D.. Attitudes and risky driving behaviors. Psicol. Am. Lat. [online]. 2019, n.31, pp. 39-52. ISSN 1870-350X.

Driving behaviors and attitudes are deemed critical factors in road safety. The present study examines risky driving attitudes and risky driving behaviors in drivers from Cordoba, Argentina. A convenience sample of 258 drivers (51.1% female; 18-75 years old) completed a questionnaire assessing attitudes and risky driving behaviors. Results revealed that drivers have an overall negative attitude toward risky driving, but still they frequently engage in risky behaviors. Regression analysis showed that the instrumental dimension of attitude (i.e. evaluations of behaviors as harmful/beneficial and useless/useful) predicted overall risky behavior. However, when specific risky driving behaviors are taken into account, there were differences in the predictive capacity of instrumental and experiential dimensions of attitude. Finally, young and male drivers reported a more favorable attitude toward risky driving behaviors. Implications for road safety interventions are discussed.

Keywords : attitude; risky driving; driver; road safety.
