Abstract

LEAO, Karina Ferreira  and  ZANINI, Daniela Sacramento. Cognitive performance of individuals that suffered stroke. Psicol. Am. Lat. [online]. 2019, n.32, pp. 119-131. ISSN 1870-350X.

Stroke is considered one of the main neurological causes of death and disability in Brazil, being associated with cognitive deficits. This study aimed to compare the cognitive performance of people with stroke according to the affected hemisphere and artery, using a neuropsychological instrument. Thirty people between 24 and 60 years old who responded to psychological instruments participated. Mean comparison was made according to the hemisphere and the affected artery. Significant differ ence was observed between injured hemisphere and alternating ability, auditory span, visuoconstruction, lexical and semantic verbal fluency and verbal comprehension. Significant differences were found in the activities of selective attention, abstraction, naming, phonetic verbal fluency, verbal comprehension, visuoconstructive praxis, and mnemonic performance according to the affected artery. It is concluded that cognitive impairment is more associated with left hemisphere and middle cerebral artery injury, but the uniqueness of psychological assessment and the need for further studies should be considered.
