The amount of obese people in the world is alarming. In this paper we present a critical view about obesity defining it from a biopsychosocial perspective. We present epidemiological data which prompt us to examine the factors that contribute to obesity and its consequences on physical and mental health. We present ways in which obesity has been studied and examples of diets and recommendations of physical activity as two of the most promoted alternatives worldwide. Finally, we offer recommendations for intervention and research to prevent and manage obesity as a public health problem.
