Abstract

ROCA DE TORRES, Irma. Perspectiva histórica sobre la medición psicológica en Puerto Rico. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.19, pp. 11-48. ISSN 1946-2026.

The development of psychological measurements in Puerto Rico is presented. This history is divided in five periods: Initial Steps in the Psychology of Measurements, 1920-1948; Onset of a Puerto Rican Measurement Psychology, 1949-1965; Academia Stimulates the Psychology of Measurement, 1966-1980; Flourishing of Practice and Research on Psychology of Measurement, 1981-1996; Contemporary Controversies and Challenges, 1997-2008. Instruments developed since the 1920s are presented, ending with the publication in 2008 of the Spanish version of the WAIS III. The psychologists who have contributed to this area are also discussed. It is concluded that Puerto Rico has a large group of experienced psychologists interested and committed to this area, who have generated creative ways of funding their research and alliances between universities to continue developing valid, reliable and standardized psychological instruments for the Puerto Rican population.
