Abstract

BOULON-DIAZ, Francés. Reseña biográfica de las principales figuras en la medición psicológica en Puerto Rico. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.19, pp. 49-57. ISSN 1946-2026.

In the history of Psychological Tests and Measurements in Puerto Rico, two prominent psychologists stand out. They touched generations of psychologists whom they taught at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus and defined the course of testing endeavors on this Island. Their ñames are: Laura Leticia Herrans, Educational Psychologist and Gabriel Cirino-Gerena, whose specialty is Industrial Organizational Psychology. During five decades they have done teaching, research and development of tests for Hispanic populations, used in several Latin American countries. Their publications are mandatory readings for psychology courses at universities. Both were trained in the United States: Dr. Herrans at Catholic University, Washington, DC and Dr. Cirino at Purdue University, Indiana. They adopted state of the art methodology to the creation of instruments that take into account the Hispanic social and cultural context. The standardization and adaptation of the Spanish versión of the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children- Revised (EIWN-PR for its acronym in Spanish), was an outstanding feat Dr. Herrans shared with Dr. Juana Myrtea Rodríguez. Dr. Cirino has developed widely used achievement, vocational interest and professional licensing tests, used in educational and work settings, through the Consulting firm: Test Innovations. Both have received countless awards and recognitions from the Puerto Rico Psychological Association. These include: Presidents of APPR, Distinguished Psychologists of the Year and President of the Puerto Rico Board of Psychologist Examiners. Dr. Cirino was honored at the 2008 Convention of APPR, and mentioned Dr. Herrans' quote: "If Psychology does not measure, it is not science".
