This is the first of a series of technical articles on the standardization for Puerto Rico of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale III (WAIS-III) renamed in Spanish Escala de Inteligencia Wechsler para Adultos II (EIWA-III). This article summarizes the process of translating the WAIS III, its adaptation to the socio-cultural reality of the adult populad on (16-64) of Puerto Rico, and the development of the experimental form that served as the foundation for the normalization of the Spanish versión of this test (EIWAIII). Emphasis is given to the important cultural adaptation process. This is seen as the cornerstone of the development of assessment instruments that can reach the same levéis of validity and reliability observed in intelligence scales that rests upon a strong scientific foundation and that have high clinical usefulness.
