JIMENEZ, Monique; BORRERO, Néstor  and  NAZARIO, Juan A.. Adolescentes gays y lesbianas en Puerto Rico: Procesos, efectos y estrategias. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. [online]. 2011, vol.22, pp. 147-173. ISSN 1946-2026.

This article focuses on the “coming out process” among gay and lesbian (GL) adolescents in Puerto Rico and how it may impact their psychological development. Some GL adolescents demonstrate resiliency and are able to “come out” without negative consequences or experiences, while others experience pain, anxiety, and stress when revealing their sexual orientation to others. Factors such as family relations, peer groups, school, spirituality, and religion impact this process in diverse ways. Moreover, the “coming out” stages are explained and various therapeutic interventions are presented.

Keywords : Adolescence; gay; lesbian; LGBTQ; sexual identity; sexual orientation; “coming out”; Hispanic adolescents.
